Unit 5: Short film production

Our short film is about a boy called Mac gradually learning he has contracted an STI after having sex with a girl at a party. Our rushes meet the conventions of short films as we used a comedy theme to entertain our audience and ensure that they enjoy the film. We set our film in a majority of areas but mainly in a college as the characters are all aged 17 attending post-16 education. We also filmed in a pub while playing pool as that is a game that lads play and a pub is a place where a lot of men would be. Since our short film is about a boy who gets an STI, we needed to film in a doctors office for the scene where the test results comeback positive so the film looks realistic and feels like you are watching something that could potentially happen. We have 1 main character 2 characters that are friends with the main the character and 1 additional character in our short film.   The audio file for the original footage is the bottom file. The audio file automatically syncs with the original footage if you move the file. If you are using an audio file and a video but the audio isn't synced to the video, you will need to move both files so they're together so the footage links and is synced. The music that is added will need to be synced to the right video clip. This means it will be dragged across to the correct video clip.        If you unlink the audio file from the video. this will mean the audio will be a different file to thew video. This means if the audio isn't synced you can unlink the audio and sync it.  I unlinked the audio from the footage because there was needed background noise so the audio needed to be changed. I also unlinked the audio because the quality of the audio was low. This meant that it needed to be changed so the quality of the microphone was better.   The classroom shots have changed from the storyboard as we needed to change location from one classroom to another. For example, the storyboard shows the first shot of Mac entering the classroom as a medium shot but we actually filmed it as an over the shoulder shot as it looked better in that location. We also, filmed more wide shots compared to the storyboards as that allowed us to say multiple lines in a shot therefore making the continuity look better and the film not as cut up. In the storyboard, we have some background actors who randomly disappeared in our sample footage which didn’t make sense therefore meaning it was better to re shoot this scene so it looked more professional.

 

After screen testing our film in front of an audience we have gathered feedback on survey money and we can see that we have improvements to make. We saw that at least everyone enjoyed what they saw on the film but we asked some questions on what could be better. In terms of the strengths of our film our feedback results show that our audience found our short film funny which was one of our goals to make a good comedy. In addition, we gained positive feedback on the camera shots we used as they gave the audience a sense of characters emotions trough facial expressions in the scenes and the location of atmosphere of were we filmed. We gathered a few comments complimenting our acting ability but I believe it could be improved. We were told to potentially film in a few more locations as we only filmed in 6, 3 of them being inside the college.
